Prof. Akasaki and Prof. Tatsumi Elected as New Members of the Japan Academy

Isamu Akasaki, Distinguished Professor at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, and Kazuyuki Tatsumi, Designated Professor at NU, were elected as new members of the Japan Academy on December 12, 2014.

The Japan Academy is an institute that accords special recognition to researchers with outstanding academic achievements and that carries out activities contributing to scientific and academic progress. Members of the Japan Academy are elected from highly distinguished scientists and are given the post of a lifetime special government official. Currently, the total number of the members is 143 — 66 in the section of humanities and social sciences, and 77 in the section of pure sciences and their applications.

The specializations and achievements of Professor Akasaki and Professor Tatsumi are as follows:

Isamu Akasaki

Position: Distinguished Professor and Emeritus Professor, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø

Specialty: Semiconductor electronics

Achievements: Success in the growth of high-quality GaN crystal invention of the blue light-emitting diode (LED)

Kazuyuki Tatsumi

Position: Designated Professor, Research Center for Materials Science, and Emeritus Professor, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø

Specialty: Inorganic chemistry

Achievements: Establishment of scientific basis for clarifying the function of enzymes, using a synthesized active-center model compound

Designated Prof. Kazuyuki Tatsumi
